THE FUTURE IS NOW!
1:00 p.m.

well, i missed a day, gonna write for about half an hour and see what i end up with...

***************************************

I'M STARTING TO FEEL LIKE I'M LIVING IN THE FUTURE!

***************************************

what i mean is, the future that i pictured when i was a kid. example: the other night i did a painting(i call it a painting cuz is looks like a painting, the fact that it only exists inside the computer seems kind of irrelevant), and posted it in a yahoo group that i wanted to join. within the HOUR there was a response to it, from ITALY,no less, from a sweet young lady named violet. she had some very nice things to say about my work. she directed me to a site she's involved with, which is all about japanese comic books, animie, etc. (thats a world i know NOTHING about). this just feels so 21st century to me... interglobal communication, the melding and cross-fertilization of disparate cultures..it kind of made my head swim. i'm reminded of this passage from william gibson's "count zero" : "she'd had her hair cut that morning on faubourg st. honore by a burmese girl with a west german laser pencil; an expensive cut, subtle without being too conservative." see how many things are going on in that sentence?

also, thank you steven, for YOUR kind words! hope you're reading this...

instead of writing yesterday, i did some surfing in one of my diaryrings. going to someone's diary STILL feels a bit like snooping or trespassing. let's put it this way...it's like you knock on someone's front door, and you find that it's slightly ajar. you go inside and there's someone's diary open on the table. should you take a peek? of course, there's a note that says go ahead..(instead of looking around the house, like you would in the real world, you know, looking at the record collection, the bookshelves, their taste in furniture, etc.,you check out the profile and the template.."hmmm, big journey and michael bolton fan, and is that a shelf full of danielle steele? maybe i'll just tiptoe out.") so you look at the diary, maybe skip around a bit, and then you say, "oh , i see, you're :

1)a lesbian with gambling issues.

2)a NASCAR fan with commemorative jeff gordon plates from the franklin mint.

3)a 12 year old girl who writes code and could probably disable the TRL request line database if so desired."

and so, you go on from there, and decide if that's someone you want to get to know better. and that's MY take on diaryland.(and of course you can always see who their friends are. then you go to one of THOSE diaries, and pretty soon you're in WAY deep, and it's 5am...)

so,where was i? oh, yeah, rob and i were at the cemetery. rob had a pretty good idea where his grandpa's grave was, so we were looking around in that corner of the cemetery. grandpa was in the service, and there were lots of military gravestones.(we were right next to slumberland, where all the babies are buried...) we couldn't find the grave, so i suggested we go to the office-it must be all computerized. in the office , a nice lady helped us. earlier, i had been joking that maybe they had all their info written down in dusty old ledgers-i was picturing having to blow of the dust...there was a computer in the office, but i think it was for looking at gravestone models or something..there were some software packages i wished i'd taken a closer look at(i did pick up a brochure about how to talk to children about death-the was a little cartoon family on the cover standing around a grave)-so then the nice lady goes to a huge file cabinet and starts looking for grandpa's "card"..she couldn't find it!(there is another cemetery down the street, but rob was sure we were in the right place) she DID find rob's grandma's card, which is weird , cuz grandma's still alive! HER name is rosemond, isn't that pretty? then the nice lady went over to A BIG DUSTY LEDGER TO LOOK AT THE MAPS OF THE CEMETERY! ok, it wasn't dusty, but it SHOULD have been...i'll bet there's one old guy who runs the place, and as soon as he dies, the cemetery is gonna go high-tech. so we found the grave. boy, were we close! it was weird, cuz rob and his grandpa have the same name, so we had been looking for a grave with rob's name on it...MY grandpa died when i was 10, and it always botherd me when we went to his grave (which we did frequently) because my dad had the same name..

so,yeah, been helping rob pack up and get ready, today he's on the way back from portland to get more stuff, he'll be in town until sat. he's doing a sort of farewell show on friday night-rob is a musician-(singer/songwriter/alt/folk/pop kind of stuff)-is it ok if i put a link here?) click HERE to go to rob's site.

****************************

wow, just got a message in my guestbook commenting on what i just posted-i took a break, and BOOM, there it was!

********************************************

there's a picture of rob in my gallery(the blue-green face w/yellow background) i didn't take the picture, but i'm not giving the photographer credit until he visits my diary. (S.S., get your ass in gear!)

lots of other stuff goin' on- get to head down the road about 15 miles tomorrow and work in a different store-should be a nice change of pace. got a lot of books the last week-at work the other morning i went around the corner to mail some bills(and see if the bank was open on saturday-no such luck) and saw some bags of books on the sidewalk in front of the cancer society. looked like some good stuff-lots of those big "trade paperbacks"-i was peeking in the bag when 2 cancer ladies came around the corner(you know what i mean;they don't HAVE cancer) and they said "oh, are you donating sone books?" i said no, i was just looking and they said that they were having a sale starting at 10am-10 cents a book! but i thought not these books, but worth a visit later. as i was going back to work, i saw another bag of books by our dumpster-like someonr tried to take 'em but it was just too heavy. so i took that bag back, but the ladies were inside and did'nt see my good deed-oh,well.

so, i went back later and got some good stuff, the best of which was "love in the time of cholera", by gabriel garcia marquez (k. will want a book report, i'm sure) and "me talk pretty one day" by david sedaris, which i'm kind of skimming now. "naked" really didn't leave much of an impression on me- i sent it to my friend alan in n.y., i think, no, i sent him "barrell fever"-no, i sent THAT to my friend doug when he lived in georgia-so where's "naked"?-it's not on my bookshelf...books, boooks, booooks! so many fucking books! like i should be buying ANY books when i've got about 50 lbs. worth to take to the used bookstore-and it's always so tempting to take 'em out in trade cuz you get so much more than if you take the cash... and then rob had a bunch of books he didn't want to schlep to portland, so i got some more cool stuff-"internet for dummies", "american psycho", "manic pop thrill" by rachel felder, which looks really good..oh,yeah,and "the black album", by hanif kureishi, author of "my beautiful laundrette"(add to fave movie list). i loved that scene where the indian woman summed up the big family get-togethers-"booze, bridge, and VCR!" what i wanted to say is if your not familiar with d. sedaris, "barrell fever" is great, esp. "the santaland diaries"-to hear sedaris read that is a real experience-so is his imitation of billy holiday singing "my baloney has a first name". and for me, his sister amy (strangers with candy) is as close as you can get to genius today.(this subject in not even open for discussion) i was actually thinking of starting an amy sedaris diaryring-was kind of surprised i didn't find one-looked up her name, jerri blank, even flatpoint high(think that's the one i'll use if i do it). if i missed it,someone please clue me in, ok? whew, time for another break-if i don't write again for several days, i hope today's entry will suffice- i can only think of 3 or 4 people who are probably reading this on a regular basis, but once you've got your first reader, you feel like you've got an audience, right?

have a list of random weirdness i wanna get out of my brain and onto the page, but i'm gonna let it sit in the old cranium a while longer-maybe later tonight- i really need to go up to work and get my new supply of happy pills-it's almost 6pm now-and i said a half hour didn't i? well, i've been in and out of d-land all day, i'm not THAT slow of a typist(pretty close, though). later, homies

......................................ok, now for some RANDOM WEIRDNESS!

i didn't know cats could fart.

somewhere there MUST be a band called "chinese fire drill"

favorite bumper sticker of all time: "eschew obfuscation"- now, i know you're not stupid, but that translates to "keep it simple"-pretty good, huh?

got the new FHM magazine today. their cover slogan, "the world's fastest growing men's magazine" sounds slightly obscene, don't think you think?

because of my job, i have had the interesting experience of being in the supermarket and seeing three different people that i could go up to and honestly say "i know what you look like naked."

on that note, i get the nagging feeling that soon, very soon, i will see someone i DO know naked on the internet.

i also get the nagging feeling that this will NOT be a pleasant experience.

i know a girl named sateeva (from the latin "cannabis sativa"- a very popular plant in these parts-no, i don't know where you can get some "killer shit" even though this IS humboldt county.)

i also know a girl with the most perfect porn name in the world-"venus beaver". that's from my "funny name" list.here's a few more:

rocco bolt

brice luster

royal cummings

guy bravo

one thing i really like to do when i first go to a diary is look at the older entries and read the "short descriptions"-sometimes it reads like some kind of free verse poetry. you can sometimes get a sense of the writer's personality, too.

BIG BROTHER 3 STARTS TOMORROW NIGHT-SEE YOU THERE!
